News-Gazette, Town Hall #3: ensure Urbana’s immigrant families feel safe in this community

Urbana, IL (News-Gazette)—Latino family liaison for the Urbana school district LUCIA MALDONADO, asks: What are your plans to ensure that immigrant families feel safe in this community the next four years in spite of all the current anti-immigrant rhetoric?

“Immigrants are our neighbors, colleagues, friends and family members, contributing to Urbana’s emergence as a hub of arts, culture and innovation with their knowledge and experiences. One in five Urbana residents is an immigrant.

“Immigrants in Champaign County contributed more than $1.4 billion to our economy in 2016 and paid more than $57.2 million to state and local taxes, according to the 2018 Gateways for Growth Community Data Report.

“As mayor, my plan to protect and empower all families in Urbana includes:

“Emergency readiness for immigrants: I will collaborate with schools and community organizations on readiness plans so immigrants have proper documentation for emergencies.

“Advocating for inclusive policies: I will work with schools, health-care providers and housing organizations to ensure access to essential services. I will invest in arts, cultural events and community campaigns to highlight diversity and support local businesses.

“Expanding support services: I will partner with nonprofits to offer legal aid, language assistance, mental health services, workforce development and support USD 116’s adult education and pathways to citizenship.

“Creating an emergency service hub: Assistance is needed after 5 p.m. I will work with Urbana police and fire departments and community organizations to address these needs.

“Fostering trust in public safety: I will strengthen the community’s trust in enforcement. As a sanctuary Ccty, Urbana ensures that everyone, regardless of immigration status, has access to services without fear.

“Urbana thrives because of its diversity, and as mayor, I will work toward a city where everyone can succeed and contribute.”
